Ever wonder what 30 minutes without internet would feel like? Only 30 minutes. Just try to distract yourself for 30 minutes without even looking at your phone. It's not as easy as it sounds. We are currently working on an experiment in my Global Perspectives class. In our experiment, we are testing how we respond to not using our phones for 30 minutes a day for 6 days. We have a cute, little, handmade diary where we record our thoughts and feelings during the 30 minutes we are not allowed to use our phone. I have to admit, during those 30 minutes I was literally bored out of my mind. I felt like I had nothing to do, but check my phone and find out what was trending on the internet. You might think "Oh, 30 minutes is nothing, I can totally do that." Well I encourage you to try it, its harder than it sounds. Which brings me to my point of all of my talking about my phone and the internet. Just look around. We are surrounded by the internet on a daily basis: phones, computers, tablets, etc. You can find anything on the internet these days from a simple question, to your favorite pair of high heels or to reading a whole book just by the click of a button. It's crazy to think how fast the internet has evolved over the past few years. August 6, 1991 was the exact date, only twenty years ago, that the World Wide Web became publicly available. Only twenty years ago! That's crazy, the internet is basically a baby. I wonder what the internet is going to be like in the next few years... The main uses of the internet in my opinion would be for entertainment, such as social media. Other people might use the internet for knowledge based information, such as questions or research. I think that learners are using the internet more because the internet might be preferred to look up something rather than looking it up in a book. For example, if I wanted to know the definition of a word, there is a higher chance I would look it up on the internet rather than in a hard cover dictionary, but mostly because it is just a faster way of getting the answer that I need. The main benefits of the internet are to get information quicker and to use as a tool to communicate with people. Is the internet usage likely to grow? Are you kidding?! People are obsessed, they want more. It's like this need they have for new and faster inventions for the internet. Now why is the internet usage growing so fast? I think that it's because we have the technology for it, the brains, the money, and there is just so much competition out there to be the best and do the best using the internet. But are the results typical of the wider population? I would have to say no because in some places around the world, for instance Africa, their technology is not as advanced as other countries around the world. Some results that I found about internet usage in the world by regions showed that in June of 2016, Asia has 49.6% users of the internet while North America only has 8.9% of users. Which was extremely surprising to me as I kept researching about it. You would think that North America had the most users of the internet, but looks like I thought wrong. Just something new that I learned while looking into the internet. Haha! See what I did there! Work cited: "Internet Usage Statistics." Internet World Stats.
